Hillsborough Masonic Lodge was founded in 1933, while Freemasonry has been in Sheffield since 1761. Freemasonry is a society concerned with moral and spiritual values with traditions stretching back to the stonemasons of old.

Freemasonry

Freemasonry means different things to each of those who join. For some, it's about making new friends and acquaintances. For others it's about being able to help deserving causes - making a contribution to family and society. But for most, it is an enjoyable hobby.

Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. It teaches self-knowledge through participation in a progression of ceremonies.

Members are expected to be of high moral standing and are encouraged to speak openly about Freemasonry. The following information is intended to explain Freemasonry as it is practised under the United Grand Lodge of England, which administers Lodges of Freemasons in England and Wales and in many places overseas.

A history...

In 1933 freemasons of the Wharncliffe Lodge, meeting in Penistone, pursued the idea of having a lodge based closer to home. The Hillsborough Lodge was consecrated in December 1933.

The meetings of this lodge were held in the old Congregational Church at the top of Carlton Road. The lodge resided in the Masonic Province of Yorkshire West Riding. For larger meetings, such as installations, the Lodge met at the Masonic Hall in Surrey Street.

After the Second World War the Lodge purchased the empty Port Mahon Baptist Church on St Phillips Road. The Lodge met there until a compulsory purchase order was served, an order was also served to the Surrey Street Masonic Hall.

Sheffield Masons collectively decided to use the opportunity to buy Tapton Hall. These Masonic Premises opened in 1967 and Hillsborough Lodge has met there ever since.

The banner of the Lodge contains the image of stepping stones. These were across the River don, immediately above the Leppings Lane bridge. They were known as the 'Leaping' or 'Lepping' Stones. The motto of the Lodge on the banner is 'Fratri pietatem praestare', meaning 'Show love to a brother'.
